WTE #2 Gary Taubes Article
Sugar industry
I think that Gary Taubes is implying that the sugar industry is not a good thing; I believe that he is saying that it is a “health hazard” in many ways. He doesn’t imply it directly but he says that the sugar industry has a lot of problems internally and externally. Taubes is saying that it is the cause of many problems with todays societal problems and it can be detrimental to the world as a whole. In the article it states that “A growing body of research suggests that sugar and its nearly chemically identical cousin, HFCS, may very well cause diseases that kill hundreds of thousands of Americans every year”. Just this statement is a justification on how he feels about the sugar industry. It was also stated that newer studies from the University of California-Davis have even reported that LDL cholesterol, the classic risk factor for heart disease, can be raised significantly in just two weeks by drinking sugary beverages at a rate well within the upper range of what Americans consume -- four 12-ounce glasses a day of beverages like soda, Snapple, or Red Bull. The result is a new wave of researchers coming out publicly against Big Sugar. So this is saying that sugary products can cause heart problems, high blood pressure and other sorts of high cholesterol related diseases. Haubes is saying that sugar has a negative affect that can potentially be fatal or cause many sorts of damaging side effects. The article basically doesn’t fully justify the full impact of sugar but implies some of the negative effects that it can cause to us. Haubes does a very good job at outlining the major effects of sugar by stating metablolic effects of sugar can have a negative impact and a possible positive impact. In conclusion, I took from this article that Haubes does not state right out that he has a negative feeling towards the sugar industry but he points out a lot of negative effects about sugar and its outcomes.

WTE #3 Dr. Mercola paper
Well he obviously feels that the obesity rate in America is directly correlated with the foods that we eat and the way that we take care of ourselves. He says that obesity rates can be blamed on or at least be contributed to all of the GE foods that we eat and all of the high fructose corn syrups (HFCS) in our daily diets. 85% of all of the corn made in the United States is genetically engineered and can be directly attributed to weight gain. Focusing more on the HFCS aspect of weight gain we realize that it is a big problem. HFCS is supported by the US not on a health basis but because it is cheap to use and produce. Eating unhealthy has been shown to be with us since when we are born. The article says that baby formula can contain up to the same amount of sugar as a coca cola. The article goes on to state that even when fed through an umbilical cord there are 287 toxins, including mercury, fire retardants, pesticides, and chemicals from nonstick products. Of the 287 chemicals EWG detected in umbilical cord blood, it’s known that 180 cause cancer in humans or animals. As Americans we are one of the unhealthiest countries in the world, in the past 30 years the average portion size of a meal has doubled and so has the weight of people as a result. 33% of Americans live a sedentary lifestyle and 50% say that they do less than 10 minutes of physical activity in a week.
Now it is hard to argue against the fact that we are one of the unhealthiest countries in the world, but what I can say is that it is not completely attributed to the way that we eat as the article was stating. We live in a go go go lifestyle in America, if we are not doing one thing then we are doing another and sometimes that can lead to us having to eat at a fast food restaurant rather than having time to sit down and make a good meal. America is constantly expanding and sometimes in order to meet with that demand we have to make cuts to what would be justified to our health. For example my dad works an hour and a half from his work and has an 8-12 hour work day. He leaves the house at 8 am and comes back around 10 pm. Most of the time my mom will be asleep by the time he gets back so he has to settle with fast food and that is only because he doesn’t have the time. Sometimes it might be a food factor that causes people to become obese but there are also underlying reasons that are not fully brought to light.

WTE #4 Final Topic
I want my topic to be on: Can you succumb to a heart disease by living a sedentary lifestyle or is it more likely to come from genetics? Both arguments have valid points to them but I want to know which is a more common way to contract a heart disease. To elaborate I consider a sedentary lifestyle to be, less than one hour of exercise per week and genetics is pretty self-explanatory. If a person were to get a heart disease through lifestyle choices would that effect later generations to have the same problems when they get older? There are many factors that come into play with this topic and I want to know what is the more common of the two ways.
WTE #5 Draft 1 Health Issue
I chose to do my health issue topic on whether you are more likely to contract a heart disease through a sedentary lifestyle or by poor nourishment habits? There are basically three different sides you can take on this topic, and they are: lifestyle choices, food consumption and genetics. It is common knowledge that you can contract a heart disease through genetics but I wanted to know the difference in how common it is to obtain a heart disease through what you eat and how you live. A sedentary lifestyle is considered doing less than 1 hour of physical activity in a week. This may not seem like it would be a common thing but surprisingly it happens way more often than one might think. In the 2008 United States American National Health Interview Survey 36% of adults were considered inactive. 59% of adult respondents never participated in vigorous physical activity lasting more than 10 minutes per week. Because of this I believe that living a sedentary lifestyle is the more likely cause of a heart disease.
This is an interesting topic because it is such a common occurrence and with all the problems that are happening in this country and all over the world, heart disease is among the leading killers. There has been plenty of research to prove both sides of this topic and show that you can get a heart disease through different means. Unhealthy food consumption would be considered eating a lot of Trans fats by eating fast foods and other sources of poor dietary meals. Drinking a lot of alcoholic beverages is also a way to contract a heart disease because the alcohol contains high levels of triglycerides, which are a type of cholesterol, which can lead to diabetes and blocked or narrowed arteries that carry blood to the heart. These two stands are going to be the basis of my paper and show that you are more likely to contact said heart disease through living a sedentary lifestyle.

WTE #6 Thesis statement
There are many factors that come into play when talking about ways to contract heart diseases, but in what ways are people more susceptible to having this problem, whether that be through a sedentary lifestyle or daily food/ drink consumption.
I am going to prove this by researching the two different topics on contracting a heart problem. There is plenty of research out there to prove the sides, I am not sure if this topic is broad enough for the paper we are writing because it is only discussing the two ways as opposed to a broader spectrum of ways to get it.
