Portfolio Essay
Throughout the year I studied the topic of heart disease. I learned a lot of different things like major causes of it, how to avoid it and preventative methods. The research on this topic was harder than I thought it would be because heart disease is such a broad topic I tried to focus mainly on heart disease and not the other things that go along with it like high cholesterol and hypertension. The research had to be very specific and I had to know what I was looking for before I found it which made for a somewhat difficult task. The more the year progressed the more information we had to find on the topic we were researching which made me look into different things other than the causes of heart disease It is crazy to think that something like this can have such a supreme impact on the world we live in.
Something new that I learned from all of this research that I thought was kind of interesting is that heart disease is the number on killer in America. To some this might be a common fact but I did not know this when I chose my topic. Heart disease kills about 600,000 in the United States every year, which is basically 1 in every 4 deaths. Heart disease is caused by several things like lifestyle choices and can be passed through genetics. Heart disease contributes more deaths than the number two and number three killer in America combined (stroke and cancer). I found several studies showing that heart disease is increasing almost exponentially, and if measurements are not taken it is approximated that 2.5 million Americans will die in the next ten years just from living a sedentary lifestyle. Furthermore the number one cause of heart disease is poor nourishment habits because not only does it lead to heart disease but it can lead to several other health concerns.
